The Pioneer DDJ-SB3 and the Pioneer DDJ-400 are both incredibly popular and rightfully so. Both of these controllers are excellent options for beginner DJs that are learning how to mix, and also make a great backup controller for pro DJs that need to keep an emergency controller on hand.
Pioneer DJ DDJ-SB3
The Pioneer DDJ-SB3 Serato DJ Controller is the third generation controller in the SB line from Pioneer and currently retails for $249. This controller features a strong build quality, two jog wheels, trim, 3-band EQ, two-way filter, and level faders on each of the two channels.
Additional features include independent auto loop controls, mic output, and portable design. The DDJ-SB3 has also added a new feature called Pad Scratch. The Pad Scratch is engaged via the performance pads and offers eight distinct scratch techniques. Any track playing or cued will be scratched and the speed is automatically matched to the tracks BPM. This feature makes it easy for entry level DJ’s to feature scratching in their mix.
Pioneer DDJ 400
The Pioneer DDJ-400 is a popular controller designed for dedicated use with Pioneer’s Rekordbox DJ software and retails for $249.
The DDJ-400’s compact form factor makes it simple to transport, and the included rekordbox dj license key and dj tutorial feature will get you in the mix quickly.
The DDJ-400 controller features a strong build quality, two jog wheels, trim, 3-band EQ, two-way filter, and level faders on each of the two channels. Additional features include FX controls, and portable design.
The Pioneer DDJ-400 features a club-style layout with buttons and knobs that are arranged in the same way as those on a professional NXS2 setup. This will help you develop your skills using an interface similar to that of the Pioneer standard club player, and enhance your mixes with Sound Color Filter FX and Beat FX featuring curves taken from Pioneer’s DJM-900NXS2 mixer.
SB3 VS. DDJ-400 – Key Differences
The DDJ-SB3 will have you mixing with Serato while the DDJ-400 utilized Rekordbox software.
The SB3 has 2 added virtual decks which allow you to dabble with 4 deck mixing, while the DDJ-400 is strictly a 2 deck mixer.
The looping controls are another area of difference between these two units, as the DDJ-SB3 has an auto loop feature and the DDJ-400 has ‘loop in’ and ‘loop out’ buttons similar to a CDJ system.
Ultimately the choice is yours, you can’t go wrong with either controller as they have very comparable features and the same price point.
