5 Pro DJ Mixing Techniques That Will Make You a Better DJ

5 Pro DJ Mixing Techniques That Will Make You a Better DJ

Becoming a better DJ with 5 pro DJ mixing techniques. These 5 DJ mixing techniques are for beginner and experienced DJs and will help you become a better DJ right away.

Beatmatching

Beatmatching is the process of matching a track’s tempo (Beats Per Minute, known as BPM)  to that of the currently playing song. Beatmatching is normally done by ear, and even though today’s controllers have sync functions, most pro dj’s will tell you that learning how to beatmatch manually is the best way to get started. Beatmatching is crucial to learning to mix like a pro, so be sure to master this technique.

Slam Mixing

Slam mixing, also known as dropping on the one, describes the moment when the DJ drops a second song on one that is already playing. A DJ usually drops a song on the one which is the first beat in a bar of music. Slam mixing is mostly used for impact genres such as funk, techno, hip hop, top 40, etc. This technique is a great way to drop a popular or recognisable song or to change tempos quickly. Timing is very important with this technique so it may take some practice to get this one right.

Filter Transitions

Filter transitions are a reliable transition method which involves using hi or low pass filter to transition from one song to another. As the filter softens the sound, it works really well in ‘camouflaging’ the track’s frequencies allowing you to blend two tracks easily.

Back Spinning

A backspin transition is an effect produced by a record that’s given a quick spin in the reverse direction. It sounds very much like a fast rewind, which it essentially is. A spinback can be used for making impressive cuts and helps keep the crowd guessing during your set.

Scratching

One of the most popular tools in a DJs kit, scratching is a technique that needs no explanation. While we will cover more in depth scratching tutorials in the future, for now I will cover the basic technique of how to drop a track using scratching.

Tips for Setting up your First Podcast with the Right DJ Equipment

Thanks to technology, setting up a podcast is really easy these days. Actually, you don’t need anything more than the basic DJ equipment to get started. Essentially, headphones, a microphone, and editing software. Yep, that’ll get you off the ground but if you want to take it to the next level then you’re going to need a little bit more. So what should you be looking for? You’ll need better DJ equipment, obviously, and you’ll need to get it properly deployed. Let’s talk about launching a podcast and putting the whole show together.

Start with a Good Microphone

The most important part of your podcast set up is the microphone. You don’t want to cut any corners here because while your audience will be able to overlook minor problems with your podcast, they’re going to change to a different station the moment they notice poor audio. Something we need to stress is that you don’t want to start using the microphone on your computer for podcasting. It might be tempting, and it might be cheaper, but the quality will also be cheaper, and you really don’t want that.

Buy Some Good Headphones

Among other good DJ equipment for sale, you really want to make sure that you’re getting a good pair of headphones for the podcast. They don’t necessarily need to be the best on the market, but you do need to be able to hear what you’re saying. When you’re out buying them, make sure you don’t buy any headphone/mic combos as they tend to have really poor sound quality.

Consider a Boom Mic Stand

Okay, so when you’re first starting out, this probably isn’t going to be at the top of your shopping list, and why should it be? Later on, you’ll probably want to consider this because a boom mic stand is not only outstanding for sound, it’s a better way to keep your arms from becoming cramped. Plus, the mic won’t drift away from you while you’re using it, which makes it a pretty worthy piece of DJ equipment.

Recording/Editing Software

Speaking isn’t enough, you need to record, and you need to edit. If your podcast isn’t going out live, then you definitely need some software that will help you prepare it, and there are plenty of great programs out there that will do exactly that. For example, GarageBand is a great piece of software that comes pre-installed on Macs, meaning that if you’re a Mac user, you don’t have to run out to the store; you already have the software. All of the Audio Interfaces Digitaldjgear.com sells from Focusrite come with free audio recording and editing software.

Other Equipment as Needed

Over time you will probably come to find that you need additional equipment to effectively run your podcast. For example, you could need a mixing board, or you might even want something to facilitate audio playbacks like Speakers or a Studio monitor set up. The bottom line, however, is that you don’t need much to get started, and it won’t be too long before you’re completely dominating the airwaves, as it were. We’ll talk more about podcasting in a future post, going into greater detail and giving you a greater advantage in the podcasting world.

Simple DJ Equipment Packages for Small Events

buy DJ equipment packagesHiring a DJ for a small event can be expensive, particularly if you don’t have any of your own equipment. However, if you’re running a business that often hosts events, or even if you want to have a portable solution for family and friends, you can actually build your own system for a relatively low price.

Even if you’re currently an amateur DJ looking to make your way into the professional market, investing in a small DJ equipment package will give you the essential tools that you need to perform in small venues like clubhouses, halls, and private meeting rooms in events centers.

If you’re looking for the best affordable DJ equipment packages online, then you can find plenty of great options at Digital DJ Gear.

What to Look for When You Want to Buy DJ Equipment

With modern technology, the number of devices that you need for a simple setup has been reduced. In the past, you would need heavy turntable decks, a mixer, and a PA system to take your DJ show on the road. You would also need to invest in vinyl records, or CDs if you were using CD decks. With modern systems, you can get a mixer and digital DJ controllers in a single package, with options starting at reasonably low prices.

One great piece of gear for a simple DJ setup is the Hercules DJ Control Wave M3. This is a fantastic device for beginner DJs and professionals who need something ultra-portable for casual gigs. It includes a built-in mixer, two virtual deck DJ controllers, and it can interface with iOS and Android devices, as well as Mac and Windows PCs. You’ll be able to carry your digital music collection easily, and plug right into this awesome unit whenever you’re going to perform in a small venue. Although it doesn’t quite have all of the features of a larger DJ controller, it is versatile, compact, and lightweight. These benefits make it perfect when you are putting together a simple DJ equipment package.

With your controller and music taken care of, you’ll still need a basic PA system to get your sound out to the audience. While some venues will have their own systems, many private venues will not, especially those which aren’t specifically designed for events where a DJ would be required.

DJ EquipmentYou don’t need to invest in a large live sound system for smaller events, and you can instead go for an affordable (but reliable) option. Your best bet would be to choose powered speakers. These won’t require separate amplification and make things easier when you are setting up and packing down. For the smallest events, you’ll be able to get away with just two powered speakers, and if you’re on a tight budget, you can skip the speaker stands when you first buy the system. Although stands can help the sound to cut through a crowd, you can get by without them until you’re able to spend a little more money. A pair of EV 1000W powered speakers is a good starting point, particularly the ZLX-12P model.

If you have some flexibility in your budget, then consider choosing a pair of Peavey PVXp15P speakers. We offer these in a package with stands and cables, ensuring that you have everything for your short and long term needs.

With a digital DJ controller and a set of speakers, you’re all set to DJ at small to medium sized events, and you won’t need to carry a whole truckload of gear around with you. When you buy DJ equipment packages from our online store, you can even get free shipping throughout the contiguous United States.

D.A.S. Powered PA Speakers – The Sound You Need

If you’re looking for a live sound setup that is easy to use and with excellent sound reproduction, then a powered speaker system is your best option. Particularly when it comes to DJ Equipment, a simple setup will be required. If you’re regularly traveling to different venues or playing at parties, then you’ll want a system that allows you to simply plug in and play.

If you want some of the best-powered speakers that have been designed for live sound and that would work perfectly with a DJ equipment package, then it’s time to take a look at the range of D.A.S. powered speakers at Digital DJ Gear.

About D.A.S. Speakers for DJ Equipment

has been in the audio industry for more than 40 years, making them the perfect speaker manufacturer to choose when you are building a DJ equipment package. The company is world renowned, as is preferred by professionals in a number of industries, ranging from stage productions to DJ sound, and even for sound reinforcement for live music.

Products from D.A.S. are varied, but they all share some of the same DNA. The aim is to make products that don’t compromise when it comes to quality of sound, but that are still within reach of the average working musician. If you are a DJ who is working private gigs, then D.A.S. is a great option for an all in one setup. Best of all, even when you choose something that is relatively affordable, you’ll get crowd pleasing sound with plenty of volume headroom, crisp highs, punchy mids, and powerful low frequencies.

If you want to really get the room moving from the DJ booth or on stage, then you’re going to want to take a closer look at D.A.S. powered speakers.

D.A.S. Action 12A Powered Speaker Package

The simplest DJ equipment package for live sound should consist of at least two powered speakers. That’s exactly what you’ll get in our Action 12A powered speaker pair, and we even throw in speaker stands, high-quality cables, and a gig bag.

Powered PA SpeakersThe Action 12A series speakers are great units from D.A.S. The system is relatively compact, which reduces the size and weight of the overall system. If you’re regularly traveling and gigging with your own equipment, you’ll appreciate the portability of this package. One of the great things about the speakers in this package is that they are multipurpose. They can either be mounted on stands or floor mounted in standard upright position or, they can also be used as foldback monitors, thanks to the angled base design.  DAS also has the Action M12A that was designed for monitor use if you wish to go that route.

The speakers offer good full range response, with clarity at the top end, and good bottom end reproduction. While these won’t provide as much low-end response as you would get with a 15-inch speaker or even individual subwoofers, you can be sure that they’ll be suitable for small and mid-sized venues. High frequencies are delivered by a compression driver, using a diaphragm made of titanium, which increases responsiveness for good frequency response. The frequency range is from 50 Hz to 20kHz, so these will be perfect for a wide range of music styles.

Of course, these are powered speakers, so you’ll get 1000W peak performance from each speaker, with no need for any external amplifier. Simply plug these right into your mixing desk, or they’ll even connect directly to the line level outputs on a number of DJ control units.

Global Truss Base Plates to Ground Your Entire System

Global Truss ClampsA truss system can only be as good as the foundation that you build it on, which is why you need to insist on the highest quality base plates on the market. When you choose products from the Global Truss range, you’ll be able to have a versatile system that meets all of your weight requirements.

If you’re looking to build a stationary system, then you can start your trusses off on a solid steel square or aluminum base plate. The Global Truss 30×30 Aluminum Base Plate is a great starting option, and at 30” x 30” it’s the ideal size to hold up standalone trusses, or you could combine a number of these base plates to design an elaborate stage lighting and effects setup. These base plates use the proprietary global truss clamps system, which is a special trapezoid clamp that ensures quick set up and release, without compromising the strength of the connection that is made to your trusses.

If you’re looking for something for a lighter stage truss system, then you could consider an aluminum base plate. The F34 20” x 20” aluminum model is lighter than the steel base plates that we have available, but this could be perfect if you have a rig that isn’t as demanding when it comes to weight requirements.

Finally, if you want a great steel base plate that is easily portable, then you could take a look at one of our options that comes on high quality casters wheels. These base plates are made for the demands of professional touring bands, DJs, stage entertainers, or event organizers who need a wheeled truss system that makes no compromises when it comes to strength or stability. How to Build a Basic DJ Equipment Kit

Electronic music has become one of the fastest growing and most important genres in recent years. If you’re thinking about taking up DJing as a hobby, or even if you’d like to start booking gigs as a professional, then you’re going to need the right gear. No matter how talented you are, the equipment that you choose could make or break your career, and can even impact the fun that you have as a DJ; which is why you’ll need to buy DJ equipment packages that will get you off to the right start.

At Digital DJ Gear, we offer high quality entry level, mid range, and high end DJ equipment.

What You Need in a Basic DJ Equipment Package

DJ Equipment PackageOne of the most important aspects of your kit, will be your DJ controller/mixer. If you’re planning to emulate and innovate on what the best modern DJs do, then most of your music will be coming from a digital source. A DJ controller will allow you to interface with your laptop, and mix all of your digital MP3 files with the use of jog wheels and performance pads. A jog wheel will give you the same kind of control that traditional vinyl DJs have, with the benefit being that you get perfect scratch response and you can even change the resistance of your wheels. If you’re used to spinning vinyl, you won’t have any trouble adjusting to an electronic jog wheel.

A modern DJ controller will also incorporate performance pads that can allow you to shape your sound, trigger samples, activate effects, or perform any function that your computer software will allow. Even when you purchase an affordable product like the Hercules DJ Control Jogvision, you’ll get top quality pads and jog wheels, as well as an integrated mixer with volume and cross fade controls. Because your controller may be able to interface with industry leading software like Serato, you’ll be all set to start moving dancefloors and provide entertainment at any event.

Monitoring Headphones When You Buy DJ Equipment

Your DJ controller and laptop will allow you to be as creative as you want with your music, but you will need a set of good headphones so that you can cue your tracks and monitor your mixes. A controller can output directly into any live sound system, but headphones will provide the best audio when you’re on stage or inside of a DJ booth.

Headphones can range in price, but you don’t need to jump right to the high end when you’re building your first package. If you want an affordable option that still provides great sound quality, then you could look at an option like the Zomo HD – 1200 Professional Gold DJ Headphones. These are closed back headphones, so they provide isolated monitoring and great audio quality. The lack of ambient noise means that you can que your mixes without being disturbed by the live sound. These headphones are designed to provide excellent bass response and crisp high frequencies, which is essential when you are dealing with electronic music. One of the best things about these headphones is that you could also use them to produce your own music at home, whether you are creating remixes or even writing electronic music from scratch.

At Digital DJ Gear, we also stock other top brands, such as AKG, Pioneer, Shure, Audio-Technica, and others.

Live Sound for DJ Equipment

DJ EquipmentIf you want to be completely flexible with the best DJ equipment, then you should consider investing in a live sound system. Powered speakers will mean that you can take your gear to any event and be ready to set up and start moving the crowd.

Powered speakers don’t require a separate amplifier, and can take a direct line level signal from your DJ controller. D.A.S. is one company that provides high quality loud speakers that are designed for life on the road, and they produce some of the best sound quality in the industry. If you need to tighten your budget even more, then you could consider Mackie, Peavey, or EV speakers when you buy DJ equipment packages. EV is an excellent choice in the entry level professional range, and you can purchase 12-inch powered speakers for under $400 in most cases. Your speakers will be an investment that you can use throughout your career, and even if you upgrade other elements of your DJ equipment package, your speakers will keep on performing for many years to come.

Sound Recording Equipment For Your First Album

Sound Recording Equipment

For any independent artist, the one thing that’s blocking them from success is their access to a recording studio. Without a big label behind you, you don’t have access to big studios, and renting one can feel like money down the drain. Today though, there is another way.

Building your own recording studio is a lot cheaper and easier than you could imagine. You can buy sound recording equipment that doesn’t cost the earth, then record your album your way. Here’s how to do it and be your own boss when it comes to your vision.

Sound Recording is Available for Everyone

Sound Recording EquipmentEven only ten years ago, if you wanted to cut an album you would have to hire out studio space and pay others in order to get to work. It’s no secret that going independent means you’re going to pay a lot of money out yourself.

With just a little bit of space and cash though, you can create that studio for yourself. All you need is a room and the right sound recording equipment. These days, it’s easy to get started and make your own studio. Once you’ve laid out the cash, you have that studio for good. You can keep working in there, and improve on it as time goes on. It’s a sound investment in your career.

The Basics You’ll Need to Get Started

If you want to start recording, you’re going to need three basic things:

  • A computer

  • At least one microphone

These three things will form the backbone of your studio. You’ll record into the microphone, and the audio interface will translate that signal into your computer. You can then track the recording in the computer, making the changes needed as you work.

Of course, there will be other options you can include as time goes on, but for now this will work as the stepping stone to a full studio.

What a Home Studio Could Include

There’s a few basic pieces that you can include to create the start up studio you need:

  • The computer: You more than likely already have one, but the wisdom of many sound technicians states that you want the fastest one possible. It’s a good idea to work with your current model for now, and upgrade to a dedicated studio computer later.

  • An Audio interface: As mentioned above, this is what connects the computer to the rest of your equipment, and so isn’t an item you can skip. A DAW and audio interface are separate items with different jobs to do, but it’s best to buy a combo if you’re starting out.  A good one to consider for the beginner is the Focusrite Scarlett Solo or the Scarlett 2i2 MKii.  Both come with a DAW bundled with them.  A DAW, for those that don’t know, is a Digital Audio Workstation.  The software that you record to, edit, and use to make your music in the computer.

  • Microphones: You’ll only need one or two to get started, and which ones you buy will depend on what instruments you’re recording. Shop around and look for what’s best for you and your sound.

  • Headphones: As you’re likely to be recording alone for the time being, one pair of headphones should suffice for now. It’s worth buying a decent quality pair, as cheap ones will save money but they can fail quite easily.

  • Studio monitors: You can listen to your recordings on your headphones, but to get the best sound out of them you’ll need studio monitors. These speakers are used for mixing as they give a flatter, basic sound, which helps you listen and tinker with them objectively.

  • Mic stands and pop filters: You may not think you need these for now, but they’re excellent investments to make. With such basic equipment you can get much better sound quality.

Setting Up Your Studio

music recording equipmentNow you have bought your music recording equipment, you’ll need to set up your studio. Here’s some tips to get you started.

  • Pick your room: The room you use needs to be the biggest, quietest, room you have. Preferably it will have hardwood floors. If you don’t have all these things though, any room you have can be adjusted.

  • Clear out everything you can: If the room doubles as a bedroom or other living space, you may not be able to remove everything. Remove what you can, though.

  • Add acoustic treatment: There’s lots of guides online to make your room perfect for the acoustics of your recording. Use them now to get the most out of your studio.

  • Set up your recording stations: These will look different depending on whether you’re recording solo, or with others. Find the right set up for you, and connect all of your equipment.

Now you have your equipment and your studio set up, you’re ready to get recording. You’re the master of your own work with a home studio, so get out there and make the best album you possibly can.

Why I use the Pioneer DJM-900SRT at all my events

pioneer djm 900srtAs a full time wedding DJ, I have learned that building your brand is like building a house. The foundation is the first and most important step. If it is weak your brand will not survive.

The foundation of any DJ is their sound quality. This is where it all starts. The day I upgraded to a Pioneer mixer I immediately heard a big difference in my sound quality, especially my microphones, and so did my clients.

Today I use the Pioneer DJM-900SRT. This high end mixer has an inbuilt Serato sound card which allows native control of this hugely popular DJ software.

This mixer is also equipped with a 32-bit A/D converter to enhance sound quality for all outputs while the digital processor suppresses digital noise.

There are many other features on this mixer such as the independent 3 band EQ isolator on each channel, assignable sound effects, 2 mic inputs and strong durable faders that are built for punishment.

All in all this is just a small reason why the Pioneer DJM-900SRT as well as the other mixers in the Pioneer family are the staples in the DJ industry.

The following specifications will give you a better understanding of some key pieces, including a longer straight truss, a Global Truss base plate, and even a circular section, allowing you to see why the F34 system is the best option for your next truss investment.

  • Global Truss F34The F34 500cm section is a straight section that can be used for horizontal or vertical mounting. It is made from a strong and light aluminum compound (AIMgSi F31), and like all of the range, it uses a four point connecting system that is compatible with Eurotruss FD34 systems. The weight of this five meter section is 25.9kg, reinforcing the fact that the F34 system can provide plenty of length, without pieces being too heavy or difficult to work with.
  • If you’re purchasing 12” square truss pieces, then you’re going to need some sturdy base plates for your rigging. The four point F34 system can be easily mounted to either aluminum or steel base plates, which are available in both square and circular designs. One option is the Global Truss 20” x 20” solid aluminum base plate, which includes conical couplers integrated into the plate. Mounting is quick and easy, and you’ll enjoy a solid connection that won’t let you down.
  • Circle truss pieces can be easily made, thanks to the modular nature of the system. We offer a packaged set of four 90 degree truss pieces to form a three meter circle. These pieces all use the conical coupling system, and the same strong aluminum that is used to produce the straight sections. Each section weighs 13 kg, for a total of 52 kg on a completed 3m circle section. Of course, you could use these sections however you like, and they would also be suitable for creating arches, or other shapes for your stage design needs. The pipe used on these curved trusses is 50mm in diameter and 12” square, with 2mm wall thickness for strength and long life.
