Arturia’s new Minilab 3 MIDI Controller

Arturia has finally released the new Minilab 3 Mini MIDI Controller!

Arturia has finally released the new Minilab 3!  So, how does the new Minilab 3 compare to the old Minilab MK2?

Layout: How does the Minilab 3 look and feel?

Let’s start with weight.  Both the Minilab3 and the MInilab MK2 have the same small form factor.  However, the Minilab 3 is lighter in weight, making it even better to travel with. This lighter weight could be due to the new eco-friendly materials that Arturia used to create the Minilab3.  The Minilab 3 is made with over 50% recycled plastic and comes in new, fully recyclable packaging.  Cheers to Arturia for making for the first sustainable MIDI controller!

Apart from its lighter weight, the first thing you’ll notice about the Minilab 3 is that there are only eight encoders. Whereas the Minilab MK2 had 16 encoders, the Minilab 3 replaced eight of those encoders with four sliders. These 4 sliders will prove very useful when using Arturia’s DAW Integration

Lastly, Arturia added a screen to the Minilab3.  An included screen is always nice to have on a controller.  It means more time looking and playing with your MIDI controller, and less time having to look at your computer.

What can you do with this mini MIDI controller?

To get started, you’ll need to decide what mode you want to be in: Arturia mode, User Modes, or DAW Integration.  To change between modes, press shift and then the buttons above the keys will light up.  From there, you can choose what mode you want to be in. And of course, the Minilab 3 comes with all of Arturia’s normal included softwares.  With the Minilab 3, you get Arturia’s Analog Lab Intro, Ableton Live Lite, Loopcloud, and even Gentleman’s native upright piano.

One of the greatest things about the Minilab 3 is that you don’t need to know too much about music theory to get started.  The Minilab 3’s preset modes do all of the hard thinking for you.  New to the Minilab 3 is Arturia’s new arpeggiator mode.  An arpeggio is a broken chord.  The Minilab3’s arpeggiator, or ARP, turns a chord into a looping pattern of notes. You play any chord that you want, and the Minilab 3 turns it into a sequence of arpeggios.

Plug n’ Play: Start creating music mow.

The Arturia Minilab 3 is a 25-key mini MIDI controller, just like the MK2.  Yet, it has added 4 sliders, an included screen, an arpeggiator, as well as included Gentleman’s Piano software.

We can’t think of one reason not to buy the Arturia Minilab 3.  It’s affordable. It’s portable.  It allows you to create awesome tracks. Plus, it’s even good for the environment. Get yours today on digitaldjgear.com for $109 and check out this video with our friend and studio master Dave giving some overview here.

Focusrite Vocaster Series of Interfaces for Podcasting

Focusrite Vocaster Series of Interfaces for Podcasting

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has been the industry-standard for audio interfaces for years.  Focusrite decided to create a new series of audio interfaces designed just for podcasting: the Vocaster.  You might be thinking, “I already have a Scarlett 2i2 interface that works just fine.  Why do I need a Vocaster?”

What makes the Vocaster different from your average interface?

Focusrite created the Vocaster series of audio interfaces just for podcasters and content creators.   The Vocaster One  has one mic input, whereas the Vocaster Two has two mic inputs. Vocaster  understands that both new and experienced podcasters may not understand or be interested in the intricacies of audio.   What level do I set my gain at? Why can’t I hear my guest speaker? These are all questions you don’t have to ask when using the Vocaster.

The Vocaster One and Two interfaces do all of the hard work for you. The first thing you’ll have to do when starting a podcast is set your mic gain.  Mic gain is the strength of the audio signal from the microphone to the interface. The Vocaster  microphone gain knob on the top of the interface sheds a green light when your microphone gain is set to a good level, a red light when it needs adjustment, and a yellow light when it is somewhere in the middle. If you still can’t figure out how to get that green light to go off, then just press the auto gain button and the Vocaster will set your gain for you.

That’s not all that the Vocaster does for you.  Once you start recording your podcast, you’ll quickly realize that your voice  sounds different when recorded than it does in real life.  If you don’t like how your voice sounds on the recording, use one of the Vocaster’s four speech enhancements to a little added effect.

What makes the Vocaster special for podcasters?

Ok, so now let’s get to the interesting stuff.  You started a podcast and you’re ready to bring your first guest on.  What do you do? With most audio interfaces, your only viable option for bringing guests onto your podcast would be to meet up with your guest in person, and set up a second microphone for them to speak into.  With the Vocaster it’s as easy as making a phone call.  The Vocaster contains a TRRS input for cell phones. Connect your phone to your Vocaster interface, call up your guest, and the entire phone conversation will be recorded! On the Vocaster Two, you can even do this via bluetooth.

The Vocaster further has a TRRS 3.5 mm output to connect your camera to.  If you are recording video for Youtube or another platform, you can connect your camera to your interface so that your video and audio are already synced up perfectly.  This will save you tons of time later when it’s time to start editing.

Get your Vocaster today and start podcasting!

The Vocaster One and Two audio interfaces make podcasting and content creating simple and easy.  These interfaces set your mic gain for you, taking the hard work out of your hands.  Both the Vocaster One and Two can connect directly to your phone, allowing you to smoothly record video or phone calls with guests.  The Vocaster Two takes it up a notch by allowing you to connect your phone via bluetooth.  Lastly, the Vocaster Series interfaces can connect to your camera, meaning video and audio are automatically synchronized.

Podcasting and content creating has never been easier! Get your Vocaster One today on sale for $159.99 or the Vocaster Two for $249.99.

Pioneer DJ DDJ-REV7: The new club-standard controller for scratch DJs?

The Pioneer DJ DDJ-REV7 is Pioneer’s first ever spinning platter controller.    Straight out of the box, the Rev 7 is a club-ready DJ controller. It takes on the layout of a DJM-S mixer + PLX turntable setup, compacted into one single 2-channel DJ controller.

Pioneer DJ’s First Ever Moving Platter Controller

Let’s cut to the chase.  How do the moving platters on this new Pioneer DJ controller feel? Out of the box, the platters tend to be a little bit on the slippier side.  If you like a loose turntable, then use this controller straight out of the box with no modification needed.  On the other hand, if you want to add a little bit more friction, simply add on a slip mat under your turntable.  The REV7 comes with two included slip mats.  Arguably the best part about these turntables are the removable vinyls.  This means you can replace the stock vinyls with your own customer vinyls.  If you’re a professional DJ trying to grow in the industry, using vinyls with your name or logo on them is a good way to boost your confidence and get more attention on your brand.

What can the REV-7 do?

The Pioneer DJ DDJ REV7 is a club ready controller straight out of the box.  Pioneer created the REV7 2-channel controller with a similar layout as a DJM-S mixer + PLX Turntable set up.  The only difference between the REV7 and a DJM + PLX setup is that with the latter, you need to lug around a DJM-S9 or S11 mixer, plus two separate PLX turntables, and then connect all these three pieces of your equipment together before you’re ready to start mixing.  With the DDJ-REV7, you get the same feel and touch of the DJM + PLX setup, only rather than carrying around three pieces of equipment, you need only transport your controller.  Not to mention that when using real turntables, such as the PLX, you’ll either need a library of vinyl records or  Serato control vinyl, and will  be constantly replacing  needles.  The REV7 is plug-n-play, meaning you can connect directly into your laptop and pull up your audio library on Serato DJ.

The REV7 has further added features with the scratch and turntable DJ in mind.  The new Instant Scratch feature has created a lot of buzz, and for good reason. The Instant Scratch feature comes with 4 built-in scratch sounds that you trigger by pressing the corresponding hardware buttons.  These sounds are built into the controller itself, meaning you can fire them at any time, even if your laptop is not connected to the controller.

The new club-standard for scratch DJ’s?

The REV7 could be well on its way to becoming the new club standard DJ controller for scratch and open turntable DJ’s.  It gives you a club ready set-up all in a single controller, while adding on new features for scratch DJs.  Get yours on our website today for $1999!

The Thump GO is portable, but where can I use it?

Lots of speakers on the market claim to be portable. But, if they require electrical wall outlets and connectors to work, then are they really worth bringing around with you? You can hook up a single Thump GO to your controller, or for larger gigs, you can connect various Thump GOs for louder sound.  The Thump GO has two mic inputs, which will come in handy if you add live sound into your DJ performances. The music ducking feature on the Thump GO automatically lowers the music when you speak into your mic, ensuring that your voice cuts through the mix.

The Thump GO has two XLR mic inputs.  For singer songwriters, you can connect your vocal mic and a guitar, bass, or other instrument for live performances.  It’s portable and has a 12-hour battery life, meaning you can now perform your music absolutely anywhere. The Thump GO has a feedback eliminator. If you’re getting feedback while performing, just turn on the feedback eliminator to fix your problem.

If you’re not a DJ or live musician, then feel free to use this speaker for your own personal use.  It’s easy to carry around, totally battery-powered, and easily hooks up to your phone with bluetooth, making it great for when you want to party with friends.

KRK Classic 7 G3 vs. Rokit 7 G4

KRK Studio Monitors: Classic 7 G3 vs Rokit 7 G4

Studio monitors aren’t just for the professional music producers and recording musicians. Casual music listeners can benefit from a nice pair of studio monitors as a high quality way to listen to music around the house. Even DJ’s use studio monitors hooked up to their controllers to practice at home. Having said this, different studio monitors give off different types of sounds.

Today, we are taking a look at industry standard KRK monitors: the Classic 7 G3 vs the Rokit 7 G4.  We tested out these two monitors side by side to make sure you know which monitors are going to work best for you.

KRK Classic 7 G3: A studio monitor for everyone

The minute we turned on the Classic 7 G3’s, we felt the powerful bass of these monitors. If you’re a DJ, then you know that it’s all about that bass. Who doesn’t love a good bass when dancing at the club? A strong bass sound is what gets crowds moving on the dance floor. The Classic 7 G3’s are a good option for practicing your DJ mixes at home. On the other hand, if you want a pair of studio monitors in your house or apartment to blast your favorite tunes, you’ll find that the Classic 7 G3’s create the feel of a mini dance floor right in the comfort of your own home. Throwing a small party in your apartment? Your guests will surely enjoy the heavy bass of these monitors.

If you’re looking for a monitor for mixing and mastering, the heavy bass of these monitors can be a bit problematic.  When mixing tracks, we recommend using studio monitors that produce a “flat” sound.  A “flat” sound means that the monitors are producing exactly the same sound as the original source.  With the Classic 7 G3’s, this is not the case, since the monitors are producing a bass that is louder than that of the original sound source. However, just because you don’t want to use these monitors to mix, does not mean that they don’t serve any purpose for the working producer or recording musician.  Once you are finished mixing, you will want to listen to the finished track on a variety of different speakers.  After releasing a song, some of your listeners will be playing the song on a car radio, some will be listening on headphones connected to their phone, and others will be listening from the sound system of a night club. Playing your finished track on the Classic 7 G3’s will give you an idea of what your song sounds like on bass-heavy sound systems, such as those often found at clubs and event venues.

KRK Rokit 7 G4: Leave it to the Pros

The Rokit 7 G4’s produce a sound much more suitable for professional music producers.  KRK installed new Kevlar drivers on the G4, which aim to produce sonic integrity across all frequency levels.

The Rokit 7 G4’s contain extensive tuning options to cater the sound to your needs and allow you to adjust the audio depending on the room and setup of your monitors. Its DSP driven room tuning comes with 25 graphic EQ settings to choose from. EQ, or equalization, means adjusting the relative levels of the different frequencies. Being able to fine tune the EQ means we can assure we are getting a flat sound before we start mixing.

This DSP tuning is a big step up from the adjustable frequency knobs on the back of G3. The G3 gives you the option to adjust the sound levels of the high, low, and mid range frequencies. However, these ranges can be quite broad and undefined.  If I want to adjust the sound level of only the the sub-bass frequencies, I won’t be able to without adjusting all other low frequency instruments and vocals as well.

The Rokit 7 G4 solves this issue. Rather than just being able to tune up or down the high, low, and medium frequency ranges, you can adjust the levels of specific ranges within the high, low, and medium categories. For instance, you may choose the setting “L. Shelf, -2B, 60Hz”.  This means you want to tune down sound at the 60Hz frequency level by 2dB. As for music producers, this will allow you to make sure your EQ is completely flat before you begin.

Which KRK studio monitor is better for you?

DJ’s, producers, and non-music industry professionals can all benefit by adding the Classic 7 G3’s to their home.  DJ’s and casual music listeners will find that the strong bass provides higher energy and a fun listening experience.  Music producers and recording musicians should take advantage of the opportunity of playing their finished track on powerful bass speakers to see what their listeners will experience when their song is played on heavy bass systems. If you need something to mix with, then the advanced DSP settings on the Rokit 7 G4 will prove to be very helpful to you.  The LCD screen and advanced settings will make sure you find a perfectly flat EQ before starting your mix. Buy the Classic 7 G3 on our website for $199.00, or the Rokit 7 G4 for $249.00.

The Hercules DJControl Starlight

The Hercules DJControl Starlight

Under 15 inches long and 6 inches wide, the Hercules DJControl Starlight may just be the smallest DJ controller on the market.  This super compact controller is guaranteed to be the lightest piece of equipment in your bag, smaller than even your laptop.  Given this controller’s incredibly small size, what can it do?

The Hercules DJControl Starlight controller is redefining the meaning of compact. Despite its extremely small size, this controller packs a punch.  It has hot cues, filter knobs, and even scratch features.  While this may not be enough to get through a full gig, it certainly is enough to practice your basic mixes.

The Starlight Fits into Your Pocket

That’s exactly where the compact size of this controller comes in handy.  The Hercules DJControl Starlight is under 15 inches long and 6 inches wide.  It’s smaller than your laptop.  You can easily stuff this controller into your backpack, take it with you on the plane, start preparing your set in the air, and even take it out and practice in the hotel room before your gig.  The set-up of the Hercules DJ Starlight is very easy.  If you are on the road and need to keep the noise down while you practice, you will only need to connect your laptop and a pair of headphones to get started mixing.  If you are working with a larger space and have speakers at your disposal, feel free to connect those as well via the stereo output.

Just getting started DJing?

While this controller does serve as a great option for professional DJs working on the go, it also has great implications for the DJ just getting started at home. Beginner DJs can benefit greatly from the Hercules DJ’s simple layout and the Starlight’s fun lighting features to help you mix.  The Beat 1 and Beat 2 lighting programs cause red LED lights to light up at the first beat of a main song, and then blue lights to light up on the following beats. Transitions when DJing often happen on the  “down beat”, or first beat of a song. The Beat program on the Hercules DJControl Starlight controller will make sure you always know when the down beat is. Furthermore,  the Master Volume program causes white LEDs to light up, with their intensity changing with the volume level. You generally want to keep the Master Volume relatively steady throughout your mix. The change in LED white light intensity will help you become aware of any drastic changes to the volume.  The WaveForm Color Program reproduces the colors of your waveform of the respective tracks on each channel, allowing you to visually see what you’re hearing and immerse yourself into the music. Lastly, the Cue Point Color Program lights up progressively in response to an upcoming cue.  The light will take on the color of the cue they are representing.  A common problem for beginner DJ’s is missing the spot in a song where you had planned a transition or mix. The Starlight’s Cue Point Color Program ensures you are aware and prepared for upcoming transitions.

A lot to offer at an affordable price point

Both experienced and beginner DJ’s can benefit tremendously from the Hercules DJ Starlight. At only $99.99, this is an extremely affordable option for  DJs of all levels to take advantage of.  It may not be a club ready controller, however practicing on your full CDJ3000 set up is not always possible, such as when traveling or warming up your mixes backstage. The Hercules DJControl Starlight makes sure you always have something in your back pocket to practice on.  For Beginner DJs, there’s really no better place to start than on one of the most affordable, easy-to-use controllers on the market. The Hercules DJControl Starlight walks you through the basics of mixing via its innovative light features. Buy the Hercules DJControl Starlight controller alone for only $99.99 on our website. Or, if this is your first time mixing, we recommend buying the Hercules DJ starter kit that comes with the Starlight controller,  DJ Monitor 32 speakers and HDP DJ M40.1 headphones to ensure you have all the right equipment you need to get started.
